GODZILLA: FINAL WARS (2,004) - The "Pretender To The Throne" Chapter
January 31, 2013
In this scene from the 2,004 film "Godzilla: Final Wars", Gojira (Godzilla) battles the new creature Zilla, Toho's Japanese version of the American Godzilla. Zilla has been rumoured to be the new name for the American Godzilla, though it has been officially stated by the director of the film (Ryuhei Kitamura) that Zilla (2,004) was just another new official character. The supposed and rumoured name change is a well spread and well disproven myth, Zilla (2,004) and Godzilla (1,998) are officially two different characters based upon the same design and species (American Godzilla), and the feature film, Final Wars, itself didn't seem to be all that serious, especially when it comes to the Zilla vs. Gojira scene. That scene was an awful mockery and parody of the American Godzilla, but it's not considered very official nor canon, at least not in the American Godzilla universe. The name change myth was also disproven by the fact that Zilla (2,004) and Godzilla (1,998-2,000) are very different in behaviour, look, and abilities, and the myth was also disproven when King Kong was released in 2,005 and TriStar decided to re-release the 1,998 film in 2,006 as "Godzilla - Monster Edition", and later in 2,009 as just "Godzilla" in Blu-ray form, and more re-releases came, and all had the same copyright disclaimers which were only mentioning "Godzilla", so if the myth was true then we would have seen the name "Zilla" there instead. TriStar is a co-owner of the American Godzilla and therefore Toho and Kitamura cannot officially rename the American Godzilla without TriStar's agreement, and of course the agreement of the creators of the American Godzilla. It has also been noticed that Godzilla (1,998) and Zilla (2,004) both have different monster icons, also indicating that they are different creatures and that the name change is nothing more than a myth. The real and official name of the 1,998 Godzilla will always be Godzilla, and the name Zilla will always be exclusive and limited to Toho's 2,004 Final Wars creature.
Under Xilian control, Zilla attacks Sydney, Australia, and later battles the original Japanese Godzilla there. He charges at Godzilla and jumps over his atomic blast, but is sent flying by a tail swipe from Godzilla into the Sydney Opera House. Godzilla releases his atomic blast at the famous structure, destroying it and atomizing Zilla in the process. The fight itself lasts 13 seconds, giving Zilla the record of the shortest battle in Final Wars, and one of the shortest defeats in any Godzilla film.
Zilla (along with Manda and Kamacuras while flying) is one of the few monsters in Final Wars realized completely through CGI instead of suitmation.
On the DVD release of Godzilla: Final Wars, the Zilla vs Godzilla battle has its own chapter titled "Pretender To The Throne".
Zilla is suggested to eat two people in his initial attack on Sydney, something few other Toho kaiju have done. Though disputed, it appears as if Zilla possesses a breath weapon, as the film shows a crowd of people running until they are all blown away by a wall of fire which precedes the appearance of the monster walking into camera view. In an interview, the director of Final Wars confirmed this and stated that Zilla was emitting an acidic fire from its stomach, which after blowing on cars lighted up and made it seem like Zilla was firing a beam attack.
Godzilla: Final Wars references the 1,998 Godzilla movie when Zilla is defeated. The Controller, in the Japanese version, says, "I knew that tuna-eating lizard was useless," a reference to the American creature's diet of fish in the 1,998 film. In the American version, he calls Zilla a "tuna-head". The line was, "I knew that tuna-head wasn't up to much!"
